Virtual Roundtable on Promoting Digital Access for Persons with Disabilities
09 December - 09 December 2021
Meta (formerly Facebook) in collaboration with the Southern African Federation of Organisations of the Disabled, is hosting a virtual convening on promoting digital access for persons with disabilities in Southern Africa. Titled ‘Equal, inclusive and meaningful access: Roundtable on promoting digital access for persons with disabilities,’ the convening will be held on 9 December 2021 in commemoration of International Day of Persons with Disabilities from 10am to 12:30.
The digital age presents opportunities for the free flow and exchange of information and ideas and enables networking between individuals from different parts of the world who may otherwise not have had the opportunity to meet. The Covid-19 pandemic has underscored the utility of Information Communication Technology (ICT).
Amid travel and meeting restrictions, virtual meetings have made it possible for people to continue learning and conducting business, making the enjoyment of various rights, such as the right to education, access to information, amongst others, contingent upon access to ICT.
However, persons with disabilities face numerous barriers to accessing ICT. The roundtable seeks to enhance understanding on how digital platforms, such as the Facebook app can be made accessible to persons with disabilities. Specifically, the roundtable seeks to:
1. Gain insights from civil society actors and academics on the digital divide in the region
2. Gain an understanding of the key challenges to meaningful, equitable, and inclusive access
3. Unpack the accessibility of Meta’s platforms
4. Unpack solutions to advance accessibility
5. Share information about our features and technologies that promote access and inclusion.
The roundtable will take place online via zoom. There will be sign language interpretation, as well as Portuguese interpretation.
