Southern Africa Federation of the Disabled (SAFOD)

Volunteer

SAFOD seeks volunteers who can either currently utilise the internet wherever they may be or physically work at our Secretariat, to mobilise resources, to carry out on-line campaigns, to document issues on-line, etc. Volunteers may also participate in translation of key documents in other key languages like Portuguese.

SAFOD wants to continue coordinating and/or implementing our unique programming for Persons with Disabilities in the SADC region and provide an open space for one of the most marginalised communities in the world. However, since we are non-profit organisation, we therefore need the support from volunteers/interns to achieve some crucial tasks! SAFOD is now welcoming volunteers and interns to carry out various activities (most particularly online) to enhance the capacity of the organisation and its partners. SAFOD currently works in ten countries in Southern Africa. In all these countries, SAFOD works through its national affiliates/federations to implement various activities that aim to positively impact the lives of Persons with Disabilities.

Volunteers are therefore expected to make important contributions to SAFOD and its national affiliates in many ways, and, in the case of international volunteers who would want to work at the Secretariat, they will add a multi-cultural environment to the Secretariat staff and bring in innovative ideas and enthusiasm.

The SAFOD Volunteer Programme is one component of the Southern Africa Capacity and Institutional Building Strategy (SA-CIBIS), which is one of the eight core programmes of SAFOD as reflected in its five-year Strategic Plan (2016 – 20120). The SA-CIBIS seeks to build the institutional operational capacities of its national affiliates in all the ten countries in the Southern Africa where SAFOD operates – namely, Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe – to ensure effective and sustainable national federations of Disabled Persons Organizations (DPOs). These DPOs should be able to significantly and sustainably promote and secure implementation of policies and legislation that promote human rights for persons with disabilities. The capacity-building strategy also extends to the Secretariat of SAFOD, based in Gaborone, Botswana, to be able to effectively coordinate the activities of these national affiliates.

SAFOD seeks to offer the platform on which the volunteers/interns themselves can enhance their learning.
